What about Ledge?

The question worried the edges of Wyatt’s mind days later as he and Marilee pulled up on his motorcycle outside Delia’s tidy little house.

Marilee shot him a quick glance. “You sure we’re doing the right thing?”

“No.” He took a deep breath and slid off his helmet before taking her hand. “But I think the time for misunderstandings and unanswered questions is over. Now it’s time for some straight talk.”

Marilee paused beside him on the little front porch as he lifted a hand to knock. “She could order us to leave.”

“She could. She certainly has the right to.”

The door opened and Delia peered at the two of them in surprise. “Marilee. Wyatt. What can I do for you?”

Wyatt offered his most charming smile. “We have some questions, if you don’t mind.”

“I don’t know. I’m not in the mood for company.” She started to close the door.

“Please.” Wyatt lifted a hand to the door to halt its motion. “Just for a moment.”

Grudgingly the old woman stood aside and held the door as they walked past her into the neat little parlor.

She looked around as though searching for an escape. “Why don’t we go to the kitchen?”

Marilee shot Wyatt a guilty look. “We don’t want you to go to any trouble, Delia.”

“It’s no trouble. Really.” She led the way. “I don’t know about you, but I always prefer a nice cup of tea whenever visitors come calling.”

She indicated two chairs at the table before she busied herself filling the teakettle and setting it on the stove.

Watching her, Wyatt and Marilee could see that she was actually relieved to have something to do. It was obvious that she entertained few visitors.

While the kettle heated she placed tea bags in a floral pot and set out dainty cups and napkins.

She smiled at Marilee. “I’m grateful for the professional way you handled my fall, Lee. I was feeling really frightened, and more than a little embarrassed. And I know my neighbor, Frances, was feeling helpless until you came along.”

When the kettle began whistling she filled the teapot and set it on a tray with cream and sugar and some raspberry-filled cookies before settling herself at the table.

“I’ll let you pour, Lee.” The old woman held out her cup.

Marilee filled it, then filled Wyatt’s cup and her own.

“Oh. My.” Delia stared at the stitches on Marilee’s forehead, and the bruise that spread down to her cheek. “I heard about your accident. I had no idea you’d been so badly injured.”

Marilee flushed. “It looks worse than it feels. Really.”

“That’s a relief to hear.” Delia passed around the plate of cookies before helping herself to one and nibbling. “I’m afraid I’m not very good at entertaining company, especially young people. I so rarely have any visitors. Oh, not that I’m complaining. I keep myself busy. But this is rather… pleasant.” She studied Wyatt and the words tumbled out before she could stop herself. “You’re the image of your grandfather, you know.”

“Speaking of my grandfather…” Wyatt found himself sweating.
